Ground shipping setup

Online stores using individual couriers or courier companies for the delivery of their orders, will find it useful to set up the courier shipping modules in WebAsyst Shop-Script: "Ground shipping" or "Ground shipping (by weight)". Their operating principles are almost identical with the only exception that the former of the modules takes the order subtotal into account and the latter one — the weight of the ordered items.

The operating principles of the ground shipping modules

For each region (country or state) the online store administrator must specify several threshold values of the order subtotal or the total weight of ordered items, which are used to determine the shipping charges to be applied.

Example

Threshold value 1: if the order subtotal does not exceed 100 USD, the shipping charge will be equal to 1 USD;

Tip: Instead of the fixed shipping cost expressed in the main store currency you can specify the shipping charge as a percentage of the order subtotal. In this case instead of the integer value (like 1 in this example above) enter the percentage (e.g., 1%).

Threshold value 2: if the order subtotal is above all other lower threshold values (i.e. threshold value 1) and does not exceed 200 USD, then the shipping charge will be equal to 4 USD;
Threshold value 3: if the order subtotal is above all other lower threshold values (i.e. threshold values 1 and 2) and does not exceed 300 USD, then the shipping charge will be equal to 9 USD;

Orders where the subtotal exceeds the highest of the specified threshold values, will be shipped free of charge, i.e. no shipping charges will apply.

Note: All figures mentioned in the example above are not mandatory and are used for the purpose of this article only.

The "Ground shipping (by weight)" module works in a similar way, its only difference is that it takes the weight of the ordered products instead of the order subtotal. For the "Ground shipping (by weight)" module to work correctly, the weight of each product must be saved in its settings. The product weight parameter is available under the "Other details" tab of the product settings page.

Setting up the ground shipping module in WebAsyst Shop-Script

In order to add the "Ground shipping" or "Ground shipping (by weight)" module, log in to the WebAsyst Shop-Script administrative backend, open the "Settings -> Shipping" screen, and click the "Add shipping method" button.

Choose the necessary module and click "Next >>". Specify the following parameters on the page that opens:

Country: choose the country where you ship your orders.
State: choose the state for which the store will offer ground shipping during checkout.

Note: If you leave the "Any state" option selected in this drop-down list, ground shipping will be offered to the residents of all states (regions) within the country selected above.

Shipping charges: enter threshold values and the corresponding shipping charges (as a fixed amount or as a percentage). Once you have entered a pair of values, click "Add" to proceed to entering another pair. With all threshold values and shipping charges entered, click "Save" in order to complete the ground shipping module setup.

If your online store ships orders to several regions (states) or countries, add and set up another ground shipping module instance in the "Settings -> Shipping" backend section.

An example of the ground shipping module setup is shown in the picture:

Calculation of the ground shipping charges during checkout

If you have set up several ground shipping module instances for each region (state), it is advisable to make "State" a mandatory field in the customer signup form (backend screen "Settings -> Checkout & Signup forms"), so that all customers have a state specified in their address data.

After a customer adds products to the shopping cart and enters the login details, he or she is offered a list of shipping options. Remember that ground shipping will only be offered to a customer, if he or she has specified the same country and state during registration or checkout, as those saved in the ground shipping module settings.
